Bunge formed the Detroit Educational Expedition and Institute with Gwendolyn Warren in 1968. Teaching focused on cartography and geographical aspects of urban planning. The studies focused on Fitzgerald, a square mile of industrial Detroit. Bunge’s book Fitzgerald: Geography of a Revolution (1971) contained evocative photographs and highly targeted cartography. He wanted to “bring global problems down to earth, to the scale of people’s normal lives” (Bunge, 1979, 170).
