Growing up in cities
The following list is based on young people’s own evaluations of their local communities:
· social integration – having a sense of belonging and being valued; able to interact with others
· a variety of places to hang out, play watch or be alone
· safety and freedom of movement – feeling safe in potentially unsafe areas because of interaction with others including adults and feeling at home in the community
· peer meeting places
· cohesive community identity – awareness of history and culture and participation in festivals and cultural life
· green space - from tree-lined parks and sports fields to wilder places
