Bunge claimed that the twelve-kilometre journey from the affluent suburbs to downtown Detroit represented a trip half way around the world in terms of infant mortality rates (Merrifield, 1995, 54). “Like canaries in a coalmine, for Bunge, children were a barometer to measure the wellness of society and spatial statistics revealed the patterns of that sickness” (Aitken, 2001,13).
