She “was filled with hatred towards me because I did not notice the children being murdered by automobiles in front of their homes or children starving in front of abundant food” (Bunge, 1979, 170). Bunge became appalled that commuters would drive slowly and carefully in their suburban neighbourhoods but speed through the downtown streets with little thought for the lives and livelihoods of inner city children. The Detroit Geographical Expedition researchers found that a lack of playing space for children forced them to play on the streets where they were
vulnerable to speeding traffic. “Especially in racial situations, children are deliberately run over by racist drivers for sport, like running over a snake on the road” (Bunge, 1977, 70).
